The Amboseli Book

I am very pleased to report that my AERP colleagues and I delivered the final chapter for the big Amboseli book to the University of Chicago Press last night. We first met to discuss the contents of this book in September 1998, which means it has only taken us 10 and a half years to complete. It has been an extremely difficult task but we continued to believe it was worthwhile and that we couldn't abandon it, as much as we sometimes wanted to. Talk about an albatross on one's back--this was a huge baby elephant.

The book will be published in the Spring of 2010. The title will be: The Amboseli Elephants: a long-term perspective on a long-lived mammal. There are three overall editors: myself, Harvey Croze and Phyllis Lee. Our long-suffering and very patient editor at Chicago is over the moon about the manuscript. She thinks it's a perfect combination of good natural history writing and fine science.

Many of you supported us in this long endeavor in terms of friendship, hospitality, donations, encouragement and kindness and I want to thank you for those important contributions to making this a book a reality. I think you'll be pleased with the final product. I feel confident that this book will be important to elephant conservation and welfare.

Looking forward to it

I'm also looking forward to this book with interest. I will purchase the original edition as soon as it's available and not waiting longer for a german translation. It's a MUST and will be a great complement in my extensive collection of elephant books :)
