Happens now and then (many elephants lose their lives on railway tracks that snake through their reserves).

Ironically this happened at the conclusion of the annual Ganesha (Hindu elephant God) festival celebrated all over Bhaarath (India).

Wildlife corridors

Very sad news.

It shows again the increasing problem that connections between wildlife areas are being taken over by human settlement and construction, like, in this case, tea plantations, roads, and railway tracks. Migrating animals get in conflict with various human activities. Or, to put it in a less anthropocentric way, humans try to take over and thus get in conflict with ancient wildlife migration routes.

The ultimate and worst outcome is that the wildlife migration corridors get blocked altogether, isolating the remaining wildlife area pockets. Often the last step is the erection of fences.

On one hand it is laudable that migrating elephants are tolerated in such built-up areas at all, but on the other hand we see here that we should do more to protect the other beings with whom we share our planet from our greed for ever more space and resources.

Yes Hans. Very good comment.
