The Amboseli National Park Management and Scientific Authority recently organized and undertook a wildlife census on 23rd July 2011 in the Amboseli National Park. This was towards the need to monitor population changes and habitat use by wildlife species.
The exercised carried out by KWS with assistance from SFS (School for Field Studies), Amboseli Serena and AERP. Each institution provided a vehicle and a couple of staff for the exercise.

The Park was divided into 8 blocks where AERP was assigned one of the bigger blocks which took us almost five and a half hours to finish. The participating AERP team were - Cynthia, Robert, Mayiani and I. Most animals were concentrated along the swamp edge though the wildebeest did not make it any easier for us as almost all Wildebeest males were spread all over each securing a piece of territory patiently waiting for a female.

It was very interesting and exciting for a change for the AERP team to count many other species having being used to Elephants every day. We counted three elephant groups in our block; - IAIC, WA, MA, YA, MB and several males with them. On an even more positive note, as we were nearing the end of our count we saw a group of Coke’s Hartebeest, 6 adults and 2 juveniles.

It was an amazing experience and we thanks the ANP Senior Warden Richard Chepkwony and Steve Ndambuki who is in charge of research department in KWS here in ANP.
