Baby elephant demise

Sat, 2011-09-10 22:30 by Anita Ritenour · Forum/category:

In mid-July, my husband and I were on a Kenya/Tanzania tour. While on a game drive in Lake Manayra NP in the late afternoon, we encountered a few elephants along the side of the road and it became immediately evident they were dealing with a dead calf. I'd like some feedback from the elephant experts out there and thought all would be interested in seeing this. I have posted the photos I got to my alternate Flickr account at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/45031491@N04/sets/72157627476659343/ with the related story.
Thanks for any feedback and comments

Death of a Calf

It appears that a calf died and the mother did not want to abandon it. I suspect she was trying to get the calf away from the road. I once saw an Amboseli female, Grace, pick up and carry her dying premature calf. Grace had one long tusk and she carried the calf with her trunk and one tusk. She moved the calf from an open plain over 200 meters to the safety and shade of the palm woodlands. The calf died but Grace and her older daughters did not leave the area for a couple of days.

Deat of a Calf

Your comment is very much appreciated, Cynthia. Whatever was happening before our Land Cruiser rounded the bend and saw the group of elephants was obviously disturbed by our presence. The mother elephant picked up the dead calf after we arrived on the scene and they all disappeared into the woods. You can also see obvious temporal gland secretion on her.
