Dionysus the Amboseli Bull Elephant

Hi

I have really enjoyed watching the programe 'Echo of the Elephants'. It was fantastic and i really enjoyed watching the different elephants. I remember an episode where Echo's family were near some palm thickets and then a large magnificent bull elephant, named Dionysus emerged. He was stated to have been the largest bull elephant in the population with big tusks.

I am very curious about this bull elephant, im sure he's from one of the Amboseli families. I kindly ask anyone to please tell me more about Dionysus ie: which family he is from, which year he was born, mother, date of independence and if he is still alive today?

Thank you

Dionysus

Hi,
If my memory serves me correctly, this magnificent bull - third largest in the population, behind Iain (M13) and Bad Bull (M126) at the time of the first Echo film - figures in both of the sequels, fighting with another enormous bull, Masaku, for breeding rights in Echo II - when he had lost part of one of his tusks - and then as an aged bull past his prime and looking in the last months of life in Echo III. I thought that the film said that he had died of natural causes. The picture of his sheer size and splendour was breath-taking and a real accolade for Martyn Colbeck, the camera man and for Cynthia's in-depth knowledge of the bull's 'character' and habits. David Attenborough's voice, announcing: "Enter Dionysus" was haunting, as audio and visual combined. As you see, this elephant made a huge impression on me, too!

RIP Dionysus

Thank you very much for the information.

Though i can't help but feel sad that he is no longer with us. Hopefully one of his many sons will rise up to his glory!

Dionysus was born in 1940 and is one of Amboseli's most successful male/breeders. He is estimated to have sired more than 100 calves in his long life. In 2003 he was at the age of 63. Very old! Since the Amboseli Field Working didn't start until 1972, he would have already been 32 by then and males leave their families from 9-19, which means they had no idea who is family was. The last time Cynthia saw Dionysus was in May, 2003. Even then he was looking rather old and thinner than he should have been. Then in August Dionysus was speared in the head and in the front leg while he was visiting Kimana. He has been immobilized and treated three times since then. Despite these efforts Dionysus seemed unable to recover and died on Tuesday the October, 21st of 2003. I really hope this helps!

RIP Dionysus
