Walking to the swamp Calf and mother - Jemima Calf follwing mother Calf with 2007 sister

Today marks the last day of fieldwork with Graeme Shannon and Karen McComb on the elephant cognition project, which has involved using playback experiments to study social and ecological knowledge among elephant family groups. Back in May 2007 at the beginning of the project, one of the first groups that Graeme and I spotted were the JBs, and Jemima the matriarch had a new female calf that was less than a week old - named Julep. Now, 4.5 years later, we saw the JB family once again, and this time with two new calves. The youngest, which I estimated to be born last night was a female and the mother was Jalila, daughter of the matriarch. The second, born to Jemima (matriarch) was a young male approximately 3 days old, but we immediately noticed that this calf looked very different, and on closer inspection I realised that he was in fact an albino, with white tail and body hair, pale skin, and very pink ears. This active little calf is the first albino elephant that I have seen during my 19 years in Amboseli studying elephants. From 9:45 am when we first spotted the family, we spent over an hour with them as they slowly walked to the swamp (Eastern Longinye), taking photos and video to record this unusual sighting, which I wanted to share with everyone. Video footage now available on youtube - Video 1 and video 2.

New albino baby

That's the first time I've seen a elephant with white hair. If he doesn't have pink eyes then he is not a albino. I hope he will grow up and not have problems with his skin and the sun. He looks so cute. Good luck little dude my best wishes are with you and all the elephants. I hope for the best

Albino Bull

I keep imagining how striking this young bull will be 'when' he makes it to his prime. Has he been named yet? Will you perhaps have a naming contest again to raise some money for the project? Cheers, Noella :)

The new albino calf is absolutely the most cutest little baby, hopefully he will be fine and health and grow big and strong. He will have to spend plenty of time under mammy's belly to ensure he doesn't get sunburned!

Does this baby will be more fragile than another? generally the skin of albinos is more fragile. What do you think?
Thank you for the sharing.

This is so exciting. Are his eyes pink or brown?

Great story!

They look pinkish in the second image, but need better resolution to be sure. Wonder how the little fellow is going to cope with sun. Lots of mudbaths. Nice Xmas arrival!
