EB female Emily

Elephant families are led by the matriarch, a term which is used to refer to the oldest female who leads the family with experience. So the matriarch of each family is generally the oldest female. However on reading the EB elephant family history, i could not help noticing that Emily (a female born in 1941 who passed away in 1989 at the age of 48 and the mother of Eudora) was indeed the oldest female in the EB family, and Echo (born in 1945) happened to be 4 years younger. However as we know Echo was the matriarch, but shouldnt Emily have been the matriarch because she was the oldest female, and being older means more experience. This has been pending in my mind and perhaps some sort of agreement happened between Echo and Emily. Does this mean that there are some exceptions in elephant society that not all families are led by the oldest female?

I appreciate your sharp eyes. Indeed, there was a mistake. Echo was estimated to be born in 1945 and Emily in 1948.

Echo is actually older

That thought went through my mind too when I was reading the family histories of the EB's, but a while back, and the whole reason I started following the Amboseli Elephants is that I saw a family tree posted on PBS ( http://www-tc.pbs.org/wnet/nature/files/2008/12/ebtree.gif ) and it shows that Echo is actually older by about three years. It was probably just an error on Cynthia's part, or maybe it wasn't and Emily just allowed her sister to lead.

Yes thats actually true

I've just seen the family tree and yes Echo is the older individual, therefore Emily was born in 1948 and not 1941, which makes her 3 years younger than Echo, which explains why Echo was the matriarch.
