Scope and Objectives

The Amboseli Trust for Elephants aims to ensure the long-term conservation and welfare of Africa’s elephants in the context of human needs and pressures through scientific research, training, community outreach and public awareness.

The long-term objective of the Trust is to initiate, support and ensure the continuation of key elephant research projects across the African continent. To help achieve this objective, the Trust aims to fully fund the Amboseli Elephant Research Project. AERP's philosophy and research methodology will then serve as the prototype for additional Amboseli Trust for Elephants projects. In addition, AERP's unparalleled body of knowledge will be made available to those addressing such issues as land use, wildlife education, protected area management, and the consequences of human population expansion. The Board of the Trust will be responsible for dispersing funds in accordance with the Trust's mission. Professional staff and an advisory board will aid in decision making as appropriate.

if elephants are to survive ... [S. Rouse]

"If elephants are to survive, human beings will have to be convinced that these magnificent, intelligent creatures are entitled to retain some share of the living space left on earth. There could be no more persuasive argument for them than that provided by Cynthia Moss." -- Sir David Attenborough
